General Description of the Role

The primary responsibility of the Cellar Operator is the filing and emptying of barrels and drums in accordance with the blending schedule.  This position also provides cross-functional support with blending.

 

Key Relationships

Internal:  Plant Manager, Liquid Processing Supervisor, Maintenance Supervisor, HSES Manager, Quality Manager, Warehouse, Manufacturing

External:  Contractors, Truck Drivers, Government, and other regulatory entities

 

Overview of Role Responsibilities

Quality

  • Ensure cellar activities are managed in compliance with all SOPs to target quality outcomes. 
  • Comply with all plant Good Manufacturing Practices and food safety standards.  Maintain tools, parts, and work areas to ensure a food-safe environment.
  • Work with appropriate internal stakeholders to drive continuous improvement and/or to resolve quality risks when identified.

Safety

  • In coordination with the Bottling Supervisor and HSES Manager, ensure bottling operations comply with GMP practices, relevant food safety, and applicable site safety rules.
  • Comply with all PPE safety requirements for assigned work area.
  • Adhere to and promote a safe working environment.  This includes keeping all materials, supplies, tools, and any other production-related items in their place.  Adherence to 5S (Sort, Set in Order, Shine, Standardize, Sustain) standards is expected of the Cellar Operator.
  • Be able to understand the operational limits and safety aspects associated with each piece of equipment (pumps, valves, electrical control systems, etc.) in the cellars and blending areas
  • Be capable of recognizing and communicating the risks associated with each of the products, chemicals, pieces of equipment, and electrical/pneumatic/mechanical devices located throughout your work areas

Efficiency

  • Safely transport pallets of full and empty barrels by forklift between the aging warehouse and barreling room
  • Blend, filter, and sample all liquids for aging and finished product as per blending instructions
  • Manually fill and empty barrels using cellar hoses, and pneumatic pumps
  • Accurately completes documentation for all transactions executed
  • Safe loading and unloading of bulk liquid tankers
  • Perform any other duties as assigned by management.  This also includes working in other functional areas to cover absences or relief during peak periods or otherwise to balance the workload.

Sanitation

  • This position is responsible for keeping the overall work area neat and clean.  Employees shall be responsible for the general sanitation and housekeeping of the work area.  This includes the responsible removal/disposal of any waste from the work area.
  • Responsible for ensuring all cellar and blending equipment are cleaned and sanitized according to CIP (clean-in-place) procedures and matrices.

 

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

Education

  • Minimum of High school diploma or GED

Experience

  • A minimum of 3 - 5 years’ experience working in a manufacturing operations environment
  • Forklift Operation
  • Working at heights

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

  • Working knowledge of manufacturing/processing operations, preferably in the liquid blending of spirits
  • Ability to work collaboratively across department lines
  • Clear understanding of pneumatic and centrifugal pump operation
  • Understanding of TDG for bulk loading and unloading operations is preferred
  • Clear understanding of Forklift and Pedestrian safety
  • Physically able to lift to 30 kilograms
  • Proficiency in English

  • Work outside normal business hours is required on occasion
